advice needed

I have shot for as long as i can remember along with a close bunch of life long pals. I have never owned a gun dog but there was always a dog in the house when i was being brought up so i am well versed in the responsibilities a dog brings. My pals all have working dogs and i feel i am missing out a bit as well as hating relying on them. I have the time to dedicate to a dog. I work shifts so i am only away from home 2 days every week and then 2 nights and there is always somebody here so the dog would not be barred up. My only concern is i have 2 kids at 3 and 4. Should i wait another couple of years. Will it waste the dog, keeping in mind this will be my first attempt? I plan to join the local obedience classes to get the basic sit and stay commands instilled and then look for more formal training. I should say i am looking at a black lab but have not decided on a dog or bitch. Any thoughts guys?

Cheers Scott

I am certainly no expert but if the only concern you have is regarding your kids I don't think you have much to worry about. Some people may have the view that working gundogs can't be pets as well but I personally have not had a problem with it. As long as the kids are able to understand that the pup is not a toy and they don't play tug or chase and make sure all the family (including the Mrs) know what NOT to do so the dog does not get conflicting information. With it being your first gundog you will probably need more training than the dog anyway(as was the case for me :good:) but it sounds like you have a few experienced mates that will be able to point you in the right direction. Buy a good training book to read beforehand so you know what to expect and then go for it :good:

you should be fine with the kids you just have to watch them and how much they play with the dog, too much harsh play when the dogs young can make them scared of kids. I'd go for a bitch first time as I find them far less headstrong than dogs and with a lab they usually seem to be pretty eager to please and learn.
