Cockers First Day

Looking for a bit of advice. I have a cocker spaniel which is now 11 months old. He is obedient and sits, stays, recalls and retrieves. I have also introduced him to gunfire but as yet he has not been on a shoot day. Tomorrow I was thinking of taking him for a walk along some hedgerows and cover crops on the shoot with just myself.

Question is is this a good idea or do you think I should leave things until next season?

Thanks

Take him but keep a close eye on him as there will not be as much game around as say the start of the season. One of my cockers was full time in the beating line at ten months yet another of my cockers was'nt ready untill she was two years so really what i am saying is if you think its ready take him if not leave him at home

I started a Cocker dog pup in the beating line at 7 monthes at first dogging in odd corners and hedges and on the lead near the flushing points then play it by ear off the lead at the back of the main drives back on when he gets a bit hot or you get near the flushing point. just take it at the pups pace and make sure it's fun for the pup, good luck.

take him, if he is getting to keen, put him back to the car, nothing to loose, just do as you say and dont go to near where all the action is, ive had my 11 month old GSP out twice now, and shot birds off her points with no problems

Thanks for the replies! Turned out the day was pretty big so I decided to leave him at home. A summer of training before next season wont do any harm!

A good decision if you ask me, it makes perfect sense to not rush things -especially after all the good work you have put in! Be patient, let him mature and continue with the basics that you have already instilled. In summary Well done and look forward to having a good dog next season.
