dunganick
6.5, its pleanty gun for any animal in this country and in kent they will lisence it purely for vermin as well. 308 is a very popular round, ive seen great groups, but then they are everywhere, 30-06 is a bit of an animal from the ones ive seen and shot, they are very popular with the yanks so must be doing something right, have to say ive not seen one group exceptionaly. but still 6.5 would be my 1st choice it will out shoot both these rounds on the bench and will do 90% of what they can do in the field. sorry to try and change your mind again, its just a v v good round B)
Sergeant
I'm gonna make this a little easier for you by saying, Go .308, its an accurate round and the ammo is relatively cheap and readily available as its a military caliber. It also happens to be one of my fave rounds!!

Gemini
Go for the .308. lovely round to shoot and can be loaded with a myriad of bullet loads and combinations. Why beat yourself up with and animal like the 30.06 G.M.
Dunkield
I shot a 30-06 Saur (?) years ago and seemed fine to me, recoil wise. I wasn't expecting to get beaten up, and I think that is lot to do with it. I had a go with .375 H&H a couple of months ago and while that ceratinly had a kick like a mule it also didn't knock my fillings out ( I shot it off sticks as I refused to shoot it prone seeing as the owner now shoots with a permanent flintch) My understanding is that although it is a big old round the old boys like 30-06 because it is relatively 'slow' and not one of these upstart speed demon rounds? As every one has said though .308 will give you cheap ammo and flexibility, but just in case you have already made your mind up.... The guy who takes us stalking in Scotland has seen more deer shot than anyone I have ever met, he is out on the hill 6 days week, either on his own or with clients. When asked what he least favourite calibre was he didn't even hesitate to nominate .308, on the grounds that he has has to fire more follow up shots for clients using them than any other calibre. Horses for courses, you didn't say what your main use for the gun would be? If it is for killing, and ammo prices don't bother you get a 6.5 x 55 If thousands of dead Elk could talk they would tell you they are pretty effcetive

Ishapoor
Right, to answer your question, go for the .30/06. To my shoulder it is softer shooting, the availability/variety (worldwide) of factory ammunition is unequalled and handloaded gives undeniably greater flexibility than the .308, particularly with heavier bullets...
