white fox
Tonight spent an evening with a Swiss mate who has just returned from a week in Finland hunting Elk. Finland the home of Nokia etc are doing some amazing things when it comes to hunting with dogs. Dogs (a variation on the husky breed) are used to push the Elk towards the guns, however the Elk could be anywhere, so the guns end up moving to a position in front of the elk. How do they do this, firstly each dog has a coat, in the pockets on the coat there is a mobile phone set to 'auto answer' the dog handler rings up the dog, if it is barking then he is on to an elk, no barking he is just searching, secondly in another pocket ther is a GPS transmitter, this is hooked up to a mobile telephone link which send the dogs GPS position back to the handler who reads this on a PDA type machine showing the position of the dog on a moving map, known as a 'pointer' system. Lastly there is a radio collar on the dog which sends a signal which can be detected by an antenna and radio reciever if all alse fails. So the dogs are released, and off they go in search of the Elk, the hunters know when the dog has found one by the barking on the mobile phone, they then check the position of the dog in the forest, and move the guns to the position in front of the Elk, then if all goes well another Elk steak is on the dinner plate. If the telephone systems fail, then the last resort is to locate the dog by directional radio. If that fails they place the dogs beding and some food to where they originaly released, and he alway returns and they pick him up later. Out of a population of 150,000 elk in Finland; some 60,000 are culled each year. They certainly know how to use technology to make it all work, can you imagine these techno techniques on a local pheasant shoot, may be worth thinking about as where I shoot there are always a couple of dogs going AWOL WF
pigeon master
Them dogs make brave beaters heading towards Elk killing rifles. I suppose with the bleakness of large predators then these numbers must be required for the safe management of them big critters. I would say increase the wolf packs and enjoy shooting less elf the more traditional way. Although I must admit I'm a bit of a gadjet freak myself. whippet.22
What did the elfs do to deserve being shot?
white fox
I have checked into this, and can confirm they are not culling the elves, mainly 'cos they are getting busy for the Chrismas rush. WF
