NGhost
Had a bit of a slow week-end, got 11, and noted when selecting ones for the rotor that only 4 had neck bands. Are the one without bands this years young?
Cranfield
They probably were this years late young, the rest of their plumage markings are usually, also indistinct. The positive means of identification is that, they decoy easier than the adult birds.

bacchus180
I have to ask this... we were out last week and shot 95 over stubble, I was a little concerned as a few birds had no neck rings at all and were smaller??... are these rock doves?.. and how do we tell the difference.. what is the difference as I know rock doves are protected in the uk... Cranfield
bacchus 180, sounds like a good days shooting. Could they have been feral pigeons ? They do not have the same colouring as woodpigeons and are smaller.
Malc
White wing bars are usually present on even young woodpigeon. I've never seen one without them except sqabs in the nest. So, if there are no wing bars they are not woodpigeon. Rock doves, otherwise known as blue rocks or skivvies are much smaller than woodpigeon, they are bluer in colour and a bloody nuisance because they mix with flocks of woodpigeon. Cranfield
18 birds isn,t bad for, "no birds about". Sounds like an average day for most of us, especially when you count the ones you missed. :(
