Yorkshire Pudding
Finally deceided that i am now "adult" enough to not only look after myself, but also a dog.The missus has been going on for a couple of years about getting 1, and it has been agreed that i have the choice of dog!!!(i know what your thinking, but she did say i had the final word on this matter. 1st time ever but.....) So i've been looking at dogs over the last few days, and i was wondering if anybody had any thoughts on a H.P.R. . namely a German wirehaired pointer. I came to the GWP for a couple of reasons. 1 the missus liked the look of em. 2 with it been wirehaired it would not get as mucky as a long coated dog (i work on a farm ) 3. the missus said it was a good choice and she would let me have a GWP. all the best :( :( :(
highdowns hunter
why not buy a springerdor
Malc
I personally prefer spaniels. But I think Labs are easier to train if you haven't done it before. What will the dog be required to do? Most important, how much expensive dog food will it eat? :(
NeVeTaS
Get the lycos dog, black lab
Yorkshire Pudding
Another reason for a GWP is that it does not shed hair.Malc i was planning to "run" the dog on fresh air and water; But seeing as i can't, the missus will be more than happy to give the dog her snap. :(
Malc
But who buys her snap in the first place? :(

Yorkshire Pudding
seriously I thought a HPR . Would be better for "walked up game" as the fields are teaming round us. If i have this right H- hunt doggy finds game P- point doggy points to game and waits for master, when master gets to doggy , sends doggy to flush game R- retrieve doggy collects dead and returns to master. all the best
highdowns hunter
and then you wake up I think that you will still have to train it and that takes time and patience lots and lots HH

columbus
Y.P. I have worked with a G.W.P. for the last two years pity its not my dog.Thay are great if you want to see one working, she'll be up in malham with us this winter. They are a bit slow to mature but when they do look out. My mates starts pointing larks in september, then moves on to pointing pheasants and marking rabbit warrens during the winter. They do have drawbacks they are very protective and don't like strangers, they will not enter cover for the hell of it like a spangle, but when there is some thing there and told to flush they will go in anywhere. My mates bitch has got a litter at the moment and i am hoping to get one of him cheap. I want to use it for retreving on the marsh. On the money side of the matter you can say goodbye to £400 for a bitch and £300 for a dog.
Yorkshire Pudding
Colombus Thanks for the info. The Malham trip is starting to sound better and better. There was a litter born not far away from me to 2 working parents. Rang up about em and.... missed out :( all the best
columbus
Y.P. I know I am playing devils advocate now ,but have you thought about a wire haired vizzla. They can do everything that a GWP can do only earlier, they are supposed to be easier to train aswell. On the down side you cannot shout at them. To get the best out of them you have to be sensitive when training them, all praise and no scolding. There is another factor that puts me off having on( the price) its £600 per pup a bit out of my league i'm afraid. Yorkshire Pudding
Colombus Looked at some vizlas and like you the price put me off a bit too. Would be cheaper to hert ladyship to H P and R for me. And she can bark quite well too, and she bites like a good un. all the best :(
