I've been using a roadside fencing iron as a monopod when out popping off rabbits. You can get these from any decent hire shop for about £2 each.

The irons are about 4 foot tall with a little "U" piece at the top and are generally used for taping off trenches/holes on pavements, etc. The "U" is the rest for the barrel, in case you hadn't worked it out. You'll need to put some king of tape (insulating or duct preferably) on the rest to stop the barrel being scratched. It gives very good stability, especially when put in at an angle and the rifle is pushing against it. For some reason I find this greatly reduces any kind of "wobble".

There you have it, a nice cheap alternative to something that would cost you in the region of £20 new.
