Just starting reloading

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody, new on this forum and am just about to enter the world of centrefire reloading. I want to reload for my 243 remington sps and will mostly be shooting small deer, max will hopefully will be the odd fallow buck so I'm thinking that maybe 90gr or 100gr heads.

I know exactly zilch about reloading and was looking at the lee deluxe press that offers everything apart from the die set. It all seems a bit daunting especially when it comes to which loads so any advice for a starter on this vast subject would be great. And of course if anyone has any reloading gear for sale ( not sure if its allowed on this site so sorry in advance if its not ) then I'm going to be in the market for it in the next few weeks. :)

lee stuff is really cheap. it will get you started. for 100-200yard shooting, go for it. the kits are cheap enough.

the most expensive thing is knowlege. the cheapest is ignorance.

team up with a handloader, teach you the ropes.

I bought, very cheaply, a second hand lee anniversary kit, but I did buy the deluxe die kit to go with it. I also bought a Lyman case lubricating kit with brushes and a good engineering set of calipers. I have since bought an RCBS 505 beam scale(S/H), an RCBS powder trickler (new), a Stoney Point OAL gauge and a comparator (new). Along with three reloading manuals, a sonic case cleaner that I was given and a primer pocket cleaner thats about it.

Is it worth it;

I think so!!!!!!!!!!! :good:

Redgum- Welcome to the forum, im sure you will receive more info and help than you can shake a stick at! Im sure you will get conflicting information. Have you thought about going on a reloading course, i know the BDS do them and im sure BASC probably do too. Before you wade in with looking at sub MOA groups etc, think safety.. I would suggest finding someone local or going on a course and learning from them, its the best way to avoid mistakes. I have a mixture of RCBS and Lee, to be honest, at my level and im sure 90% of reloaders, the kit will be more than adequate. Reloading is great on many levels for me, it makes you appreciate ballistics and also to look at your rifle in a different way, its also really rewarding when you get vastly improved groups compared to factory ammunition.

Where are you located? Im sure there will be guys on here who will be happy to show you the ropes if your local. Also, a note on the SPS.. Change the stock! I did and the groups improved massively, otherwise your pi**ing into the wind with accurate homeloads!

How much stalking have you done?

I'm in Gloucestershire and as for stalking experiece just one tasty Muntjac at 60yds, would you recommend a differant rifle in 243 for stalking and throwin a 100g load. I would like a shorter barrel gun that is nicely balanced with a predator 8 on the end of it.

Redgum, glad to see you getting a taste for stalking! Your rifle is more than adequate for stalking, most shots stalking in England will be taken inside 100yds, so uber accurate rounds arent a necessity, although its always good to strive for perfection. If you can afford to change the stock/do a reloading course, then so be it but otherwise, im sure the guys around these forums will offer a lot of help and completely gratis!
