Cleaning a Savage / Stevens 77F pump action

Hi all

Bought my second shotgun today, a Savage / Stevens 12 gauge pump with vario choke :hmm:

Will be testing it tomorrow, but just wondering how I'd go about cleaning it? I have a pull through for the barrel, but what about the mechanism? I asked the bloke in the gun shop, but he said he'd never done it - he basically suggested I unscrew the screws in the action, and catch whatever bits flew out! :s I could probably figure it out by trial and error, but if anyone could give me a few tips on what to do and what to expect that would be great. Or, if anyone happens to have a manual available that would be fantastic - I did have a look on the web, but nothing.

Secondly, I was wondering if it was proofed for steel shot. I don't see the fleur-de-lys symbol on it, but I think it's a fairly aged gun, so I'm not sure what to look for. The action has the letters BNP on it with a crown over the top of them, plus "3.5 tons per sq inch" and "5s" in a little circle, and "sBp" in an oval. It also has two symbols like crossed tomahawks, one of which has 0 on the left, 8 on the right and 2 on the bottom. The other one has M on the top, R on the bottom, 8 on the left and 9 on the right. Does this mean anything to anyone?! (Year of make perhaps?)

Many thanks,

Giles

Just to add, there seems to be a problem with the little spring that holds the cartridges into the magazine. If I put one in the mag and one in the chamber, the action cycles fine. But if I put two in the mag, the pressure of the spring overwhelms the cartridge retainer and pushes the head of the second cartridge back out. This jams the action, so I can't eject the round in the chamber. Is this an easy fix, or a gun smith job..? :s

Cheers.

What type is the cartridge stop, is it just a piece of spring metal? it might need bending in shape if it is.. not familiar with the savage but all pumps are similar

wouldn't be surprised, in the Mossberg manual it actually says to turn the gun on its side and shake til the magmech falls out :)

I know just the part. I had one of these pumps and it is stamped metal only. I sent for it from a U.S website called "Numrich" for a few dollars. The old cartridge stop was a bit chewed. I replaced it and it still did not properly retain the shells in the magazine,it did not protrude enough. Sold it because of that.

Best of luck.
