Some time i put a post up about how short you could take 308 barrel. genral opion was to about 20" would be fine.

Wonder weather you could it to a sporter wiegth barrel as the only info on the net seem to be about heavy barreled rifle. Jusy wonder weather any members have shortened sporter porfile, at 20"

Would be great to hear what your experanice has been.

Thanks

Hi Dave,

I am taking delivery of a 16" .308 in the next few weeks so am hoping the format works :good:

Mine was a barrel spec'd at that length, so the taper is right.

What length is the rifle you have now ?

Cheers

One i am looking at is 23" or 24" and was looking to have taken down 20" or may be 19". Mod that would be used will be jet-z compact. And looking have shortened so it not like using musket.

Dave.

Sounds a reasonable plan to me :good: but you need a good gunsmith to say for sure.

After all there are loads of .308's in the 20" area.

Good luck

be interested in how you get on with it at 16'' i have a 243 in 16'' it is spot on and i was thinking along the same lines for my 308 . :good:

Hi Bignoel,

I looked at quite a few possible calibres before deciding on .308 16"

The rifle should have around 2,000 ft/lbs energy so comfortably deer legal too (a lot of other calibres were marginal here)

The spec was for a woodland stalker (maximum 200 yard stalking use) with most shots around 50-150 yards.

Should be a good pig gun too.

I have a few 155g Sierra's loaded up waiting for the rifle to arrive, and I plan to use 150g 'ish bullets.

Cheers
