i am looking to buy a large scope mounted lamp that also comes with a battery, the reason for this is that i went out tonight looking for foxes with my 22-250 i spotted one but it was a bit lamp shy so it took me a while to get close enough to get posotive target recognision with my deben tracer lamp, can any one sudgest anything please, because i would of had the opitunity to shoot the fox many times if the lamp i had was powerful enough

Hi hill billy

I too found the tracer (tactical version) has a short beam - thats ok ish for ratting or very close wabbits

Now I'm no electronics expert - but able to use a voltmeter,I found that there was only 2 volts reaching the 6v lamp - even though it has a 12v battery pack!?!

EH?

A call to my clever'r brother revealed that the std NiMH's would not be able to feed it well enough (I think) and when a dimmer is used the voltage output would "be about half way the range" gobbledeegooksomething before I got lost in technoland

To cut to the chase I bought 10 bigger capacity tagged cells (2500mah) from maplins @£40  soldered 9 of em together (broke one of the tags) and hey presto...

I estimate I have trebled the range (it scares bunnies at 150yds+ish) and still have oodles of capacity left after a 4/5 hour stalk using it frequently - but not permantly

I have now started to use a red filter which reduces its intensity - but still scares em if I use it at full power for more than a few seconds

I pass them on a medium power scan - then come back on low power - prepare for the shot then up the power a bit for the kill
