deeksofdoom
Well what better to be doing with my spare time over the last few weeks than work on my latest stick. I used a fallow antler which was shed. A young lad who beats on our shoot found it on his fathers land and has been pestering me to make a stick for him so I finally got the time to do it. I had came across a piece of twisted hazel a couple of years ago and it was after drying out nicely I steamed it a little to straighten it up a bit and sure enough it was good enough to make a stick. I used a he coronet of the antler which I cut at an angle to match the twist of the stick. For the marriage I used a cow bone spacer and a buffalo horn spacer. I drilled out the handle and made a dowel using the top of the shank of the hazel stick. I then glued it all together using araldite. I drilled a hole through the handle with a 6mm drill bit and inserted a casing from a .22 magnum, this also added a bit of strength to the join. For a bit of decoration I added an old Irish penny piece, to fit that I had to get a dremel and make a hole in the shape of the coin and insert it into the antler handle, the coin had been bent to go on a stick. the coronet of the handle was rough and I smoothed it with the dremel and then sanded it and polished it with a plastic scouring pad. I think it turned out quite well and I like the way the marriage worked out for me some nice smooth lines, here are the pics enjoy!
