Pigeos back feeding hard

Recommended Posts

After a couple of slow weeks as the birds have paired up and had a good couple of hours on some linseed drilling .

Finnished with 39 in three hours the birds have had a complete change and was really focused on decoying .

Now this year I have alot peas to proctect as I have in recent years given the birds a bit of a rest for personnel reasons.

But I think this year I will have kick on and protect the 3000 acres of peas.

Pea variety seems to be key I have kept a detailed history of crop and variety and bags over the last five years.

It makes intresting reading I have found diffrent pea types affect pigeon intrest and the one field that I shot over 5000 from drilling to ploughing in was Genki if I have writen it right is the one that attracts pigeons the most.

Others there not so keen on I will have to dig it out for more detail .

I have been shooting most of the birds now on white clover and well eated down OSR.

Kind regards OTH

I have a couple of farms that have bear OSR patches so i will have a look at them tomorrow and let the birds build confidence on the linseed. will ask what the pea variety is this year. i have a few on Saturday on the linseed, after opening the crop of 30 birds it was linseed in most with only 2 with pea and 3 with hard maize. half the birds were running on empty.

Hmmm.. I normally have access to around 1200 acres of peas, but i've never really kept a list of which variety i shoot pigeons over, though i have a list. I do know that in certain areas the pigeons will always be on the peas and in others they won't get touched- i'll be making a note of the varieties more now. My farmers generally drill them from the start of march to the end of may, so they're well staggered. I normally start keeping my eye on the peas at about this time- my first bag of any note on peas last year (93) was on may 23rd.
