The Early days

Frank, long story.

My son(10 years old at the time 1996) had gone ferreting for the day with his cousin(17yrs old). I was visiting my then wife in hospital, she managed to come home for a few hours and we were at the in-laws.Later on my son arrived to say that they had caught a young rabbit and he & my daughter wanted to keep it. He was so interested in the young rabbit, they had not locked the Hob away proprerly, which managed to get into the hawk shed and duly set about what they are best at........

I did not find out till the next morning when i was sending the kids to school, i heard scratching at the door and was surprised to find it was the hob. Then it hit home when i couldn't hear the hawks bell(he would always shake his tail when the door opened) Sent the kids off to school and spent the day in tears(not ashamed to say that), a very tragic loss and when i look back at the pics it still brings a tear to my eyes

Kip

read your post and tears in MY eyes what a terrible thing to happen. i really feel for you. as you say it was some years ago, but to loose as much as that  . well sorry it happened. some years ago i used to go hawking with a mate who also had a Harris.. out of this world .on this one day it was that cold the batteries in the camera would not work well. but what a brill day.

nice pictures of what was a few good days shooting though.

I have a few pictures that i took, after keeping the 35ml under my waxproof for a while. i had lost some of them only have a few left of the harris coming to the glove from a frost covered tree about 75yds away using a motor drive on my camera. didnt get any rabbits that day but a memory of the bird will be forever in my mind.

The owner of the bird was a chap called John Bennet. sure he wont mind having a mention

Yes mate, but it is much easier to have the guns, at least they can be locked away when i go on Holiday.(off to Australia for 5 weeks on the 23rd Jan)

Hawking is a truly great sport, but the time that needs to be put in is unbelieveable, not as easy to get someone to look after your hawk as it is your dog.

Maybe in the future i will get a female Harris, i have had birds from the age of 12, and now i am 37, the bug will always be with me. Here's hoping
