Shooting today....

Recommended Posts

Just a quick note to say a BIG thankyou to Steve (Caesar) who kindly accepted the offer from his 'shooting available' post to team up and shoot over one of his permissions today.

We met up at 8am for a quick pit stop of egg 'n bacon sarnies, then onto see the farmer to get the low down on where he wanted us to shoot. We were directed to a field of rape (Winter/spring not sure.... :) ) and had a recce with the bino's just to check the birds were actually hitting the field.

Sure enough there were a trickle of birds swooping in just over one of the boundary hedges, whilst others appeared to be making for one of two big trees further round the field.

Steve let me take first dibs so I went for the boundary hedge hoping that the birds would continue to come in with me waiting armed with 30g of Mr. clear Pigeon No. 6 to hit 'em as they came over.

We setup with the sun beaming down, and me thinking why on earth had I got umpteen layers on....

The birds came in dribs and drabs throughout the morning and I found it difficult to get on 'em as they sped past over the hedge line. I lost one in the rape to a rangy shot and nearly lost another over the other side of the hedge as there were a field of cattle in it and I had to pluck up courage to wave them off from trampling the wee grey interloper into the muck. Never known cows take offence to one dead pigeon, they didn't bat an eyelid at me shooting from the other side of the hedge, in fact they all came over and started nosing about right where I was sitting!

The first rain shower hit us late morning though thankfully didn't last. However by this time the flightline had dried up. We sat through until 3 by which time the rain started in earnest.

We packed up having taken fifteen (Steve getting the lions share). On getting back to the motor, it became apparent where all the birds had gone. The field on the opposite side of the road from where we'd parked was blue with 'em. The only trouble was, the field held livestock and there was no way we would have been able to shoot it.

All told it was a great day out and nice to meet up with another PW member. Shame we didn't get any photo's, sorry chaps.

Thanks again Steve, it was much appreciated on my part.

Good job caeser and good write up Sinistercr0c.

Interesting about the cows, I have had them trying to get over the fence to me when shooting duck on a pond. It can be quite scary (whimper) when this big lummox of a cow tries to get its legs over and its breath is warming your cheek (oo er missus).

I have got back into shooting thanks to a PW member and a new friendship has ensued, hopefully more people will help those without permission but as has been said before, it is a gamble inviting a stranger and hoping they don't muscle into your patch.

All the best to both of you and good job again caeser.
