Proud of my doggie

Just thought i'd tell you all how proub i am of my chocolate lab.

Despite what i've read up on training dogs for shooting, i still went about it in much my own way. The wrong way in my friends opinion who trains dogs. i.e worked her too hard as a young pup, introduced her to feather too early, introduced her to the gun too early and finally introduced her to the field too early. Not much wrong then

Anyway, cutting it short, the end result is that at 9 months old on her 4th trip out the field she is (touch wood) retrieving the shot birds, with confidence and enthusiasm.

Today she retreived 18 out 18 shot birds :good: and she would of got alot more if.......erm............. I did'nt keep missing :good:

It's a great feeling, she my first "gundog" and it's great to see everything falling into place.

dont send her out for all the birds. you need to go out for a few yourself. if you dont then you might end up with a dog like mine. he thinks that every shot bird is his, he thinks he knows best and runs in and then he sits out in the open with bird in his mouth looking at me. he knows he is doing wrong and thinks he will get a ####ing for running in. once he is out there then its to late as the deed is done so i end up putting him on a long lead, he then runs out the hide and stops just short of the rope so he doesnt hurt his neck.....

...to bl00dy clever my lad is and im to dumb to notice that i was doing wrong when he was younger. the new pup will do as she is told, no if's, no but's.lol yer right course she will..

the way i see it though is if your dog does what you want and need it to do then good enough, as long as the recall is there and it dosent chase unless you want it to. why have a dog do what others think it should do, its your dog as end of day.

Phil.
