Cranfield
I have always assumed that the rotary is supposed to look like birds landing. Its my experience that incoming pigeons always land at the rear of any birds already on the ground (they may leap frog later). So , I always place my rotary at the rear of my ground decoys , where I want incoming pigeons to land. I know other members swear by putting them at the head of the layout, or even to one side. Pays your money and takes your choice.
Blunderbuss
You'll probably get a few different views on this, but if I'm shooting into the wind and the head of the U is facing me, I put the magnet at the head of the U but slightly to one side. This sometimes does the trick, but I've also had days when it's definitely put them off. More so in sunny weather and over stubble it seems, where the magnet and arms seem to stand out a bit more.
