angrymallard
I have a lab which will be turning 2 next month, i have to other working labs which are great but this new dog belonged to my teacher and when she wanted him rehomed as a pup,and i had to take him. Anyway as a student i had been training him as much as i could but he only has some basic training skills. He is a strong and powerful swimmer and i really would like to use him for waterfowling although he needs a lot more training and has very little experience. It has been several weeks since his last training excercises as i thought he would just become a pet but now i have decided to give him another shot, he brought back 2 ducks to me in the back garden today without any problems. What do you guys think can a dog of this age become a good retriever with a little bit of encouragement?
monkeyboots
aye there is no reason why it cudnt do the job, just take him out with you and give him a retrive at a easy duck/teal or whatever and slowly build him up to harder/further out retrives or take him with the orther expericaned dogs and let him watch what goes on then give him a odd retrive every now and then till he learns what to do Edited September 11, 2010 by monkeyboots
soreshoulder
there is the saying that you cant teach an old dog new tricks, but i wouldnt class 2 as an old dog and my dog was partially trained - knew all the basics - when i first took him out and he is now a really good dog who will sit on the peg and he has gained more in experience than training could ever teach him
kent
Is there something i am missing? 2yrs is quite a good age to enter a dog to real shooting, but it depends on the training he has had not his age. Not a believer in entering any dog at a certain specific age each one is ready when it's ready, entering a partly trained dog not ready for real shooting will give you a partly good working gundog for ever more. Is one year of proper training not worth 8-10 yrs proper work?
