oscarsdad
Hi guys, quick questions.... my border has ground one of his claws on his rear right leg down to the quick, I think he did this yesterday morning playing with his ball as I noticed before I went to work. When I got home he had clearly been licking it all day and he was limping and clearly uncomfortable and the toe was red and inflamed. I cleaned it up and put antiseptic on it then taped the end of an old sock over the bandage so he couldnt lick it... He seems a lot better this morning but still has a slight limp - i have not walked him today as I think it kept him awake all night so he has slept most of the day. Does anyone have experience of this or similar and how quickly will the claw grow back? Thanks,
steve0146
You done the right thing mate. It will grow back eventually. One of ours broke her dew claw off on a shaggy carpet. It grows to normal length and then fall out for what ever reason. Our lurcher often breaks nails, spends the evening chewing them but they always heal ok. apache
You sure there's not a partial tear of the nail? It often is left hanging off and the dangling nail causes a lot of pain - if so just snip the loose bit off. You must stop the dog licking it or it will become infected, but if you cover it for too long it will also get sweaty and infected!
oscarsdad
Thanks for the responses guys, the nail is not split, he has ground it skidding on the drive when chasing his ball...I took the bandage off first thing this morning,he has licked it a few times but I have told him not to & he seems to be doing as asked! browning123
It will heal ok - just watch for any infection. My terriers have completely ripped their nails out, some grow back others do not.
