tom_0787
We have a lab pup arriving next month and I owe it to my last dog to train this one to a decent working standard as Magnum was always happiest when doing dummy work. He passed away before his first season as he was just begining to mature in terms of steadyness. What are the main differences or rules should i was in training a gundog pup opposed to a regular pet dog? Im fine with the training from 6 months on but how do I stop him becoming hard mouthed and reduce the temptation to sniff and mark everything when heel training begins? Are there any absolute no-no's that would be acceptable for a pet dog? Any help would be really appreciated.
kent
Chasing them about when they pinch clothes off clothes line etc is not good, playing tug of war is not so great. In most respects though Gundog work is mainly just a continuation rather than a contradiction

JBS
What can I do to ensure he develops a soft mouth? As said before don't pull anything in his mouth-ever! And don't let kids or anyone else pull anything in his mouth -ever!
alfa taf
hedgehog in a sock, 2 hairbrushes in a sock. or a normal dummy with barbed wire wrapped around it. I hope you are joking.

kent
What can I do to ensure he develops a soft mouth? This is mainly genetic, however my GWP suceeded in grabbing a few rabbits in the garden and totally squished them as a pup. Rory major recomended i gave him lots of retrieves with frozen hard rabbits before putting him on total fresh ones etc. All i can say is he brings them in totally unmarked now
