Only ever tried to make one stick, to a success aswell, i think atleast.

Just a few questions to someone who makes a few of these... Whats the best finish to give them? I put a few coats of yachting varnish on, but its got a very glossy finish, anything else do the job?

Cheers

Another generla question for anyone, how long should you leave the wood to season for?

It depends on the type of tree you cut from gibby.

A tree like holly takes a lot longer than the likes of hazel as it is very close grained.

If you cut some hazel shanks they should be ready for working on in between 6 and 9 months depending on how you store them to season.

If you cut a one piece stick from a tree i would leave it anywhere between 12 to 18 months to season depending on the type of tree it is

Bees wax good idea, how often would that need toping up?

Depends on what you use the stick for gibby.

If it is a stick i use in the field i give it a top up once every year or two but if it is a unusual stick that i dont use while out the country i use my discresion and give it a polish when i think it needs it.
