hello everyone. been ages since i was last on here and the trainning on me springer has been very slow not through his fault but due to the fact i was working away weeks on end so the wife was walking feeding and playing with him. any way when i got home i took him out for some trainning and it got me down to how out of it he was. he was to intrested in sniffing fences, eating grass and doing anything he wanted and not me. i could feel myself loosing my temper so on the lead and back home in the kennel. and left trainning for a couple of days and just exersized him and played with him. then 2 or 3 weeks ago i thought i will try trainning again.

not expecting alot from him just trying to get the basics going again from the beiginning again. and he was doing really well so a bit more confidence and tryed some more difficult things like blind retrieves over obsatcles and to my amazment he marked it started working to it covering the ground on his way over a high fallen tree and back over with a cold pheasant straight back to me. took a bit of coaxing to get him into me properly a nice bit of pate made it a lot easier to get back the retrieve.

but basicly i would like to know if it would be ok for me to take him onto a pheasant shoot beating?

my only concern now is everytime he sees other dogs he wants to run off and play. obviosly if i do take him he will be on a lead till we get to the thick cover and once through the cover back on the lead. i am so proud of how well he has come along since i got back from london 3 month ago. what do you guys think? any advice would be great. many thanks.

Too much too fast as they say. Keep him away from the other half. Insist on sitting before anything i.e opening doors/gates, feeding, getting in the car. Get him on his backside with the stop whistle.

If you meet other dogs get him to sit and ask the owners to bring the dogs to you (if possible!) Let him socialise sitting down not sniffing other dogs backsides!

Gentle but firm discipline and think about taking him after Christmas.

Hope this helps

wow this story sounds familiar only my dog has just turned 2. I am a student and while ive been at school he was being looked after by my parents and i got to spend little time with him. He also has problems with other dogs, im not expecting a field trial champion just a good dog for rough shooting and wildfowling. He has made a remarkable improvement in just the last few weeks with almost 0 experience he managed to flush me a lot of pheasants, which unfortunately i was having a bit of an off day:( he did manage a good retrieve at a pigeon though. Anyway just a few trips out shooting have improved his all round behaviour, his walking to heel, responding to the stop whistle and he has now even started to refrain from playing with other dogs and young children. So after almost giving up on him a few weeks ago he has made an amazing turn around so dont give up on him just yet.

Sounds like you have a potentially a good dog!

As he is still a youngster keep him well back and on a lead when you are with other dogs and gently socialise him with short periods of play making sure he still drops to the whistle etc.

Hope this helps?

it does pal. as said in the past i didnt get him from working parents but was told told that it will be in him anyway due to the breed. i am the most proud dog owner especially with his turn back. i havent even used a starter pistol or anything to introduce him to shot due to the amount of fireworks going off at the moment and they dont bother him one bit which excites me even more. even if i couldnt work him i dont think i could of got rid though as i love him to bits.

but maybe next year or year after i might get another spaniel but a bitch and might breed. but i will wait and see. my next shoot day on the beaters line is the 30th this month so will let you know how he copes and what it was like and fingers crossed he will behave. :good:
