I have used Cabelas for some long time, buying clothing, fishing equipment and books.

Delivery, quality, etc have all been fine.

Make sure you understand the total amount you will be paying.

Take into account the shipping costs.

If you bulk up your order, you can get free, or cheaper delivery charges.

Also, be very careful and clear when you order.

If you ask for the wrong size ,colour etc, you will get it. :)

Watch for the sizes.

If buying expensive clothing I'd be very careful. I bought deer hunter goretex camo from my local gunshop. I'm a 34" waist but had to buy 38" to fit  All the sizes were to cock. There's nought like trying them on for fit. And no, I hadn't just over indulged at MacDonalds! :)

I have found the Cabelas sizes to be OK, just remember the boot/shoe sizes are different from ours.

Its always better if you can try before buying.

I often go round the shops doing this, making a note of size, colour, brands etc and then order the same items online, if there is a big saving to be had.

PS. Once you order from Cabelas online, you will receive their Internet catalogue by email and every special offer they have..............for ever and ever and ever and ever.....

Cranfield,

Do they have a 'Gift' service? I have dealt with a firm in the US that would open the packaging and include a Birthday card saying 'Happy Birthday from Uncle Buck!!" thus avoiding import duty and VAT as it was a gift

Not sure if they can still get away with it. I used to buy cheap DVDs from Canada. The package was always marked ' used software - optical media' for the same reason.

Also, find out who the courier is. Some firms declare all shipments to customs. My mate ordered a £100+ set of fancy bike lights from the US. Thought he got away with the duty and VAT until a letter turned up with a bill for £50 from customs. Turned out UPS send a list of all shipments direct to customs for post billing!!! :<

I have brought things back from the US in my luggage packed as "gifts", just in case Customs stopped me (they never did), but I have never had anything despatched to me, this way.

I doubt the bigger companies would do it, as its a bit blatant.

It sounds like one of those things that use to happen, until Customs caught on to it. :)

The best way to get high value stuff, is to go over there on holiday and bring it back. I do.
