Reload
Hi all, I have just got my ESS, he is 16 wks old and coming on well with his obedience training. I would like to train this dog to be a good all rounder. Can anyone recommend any literature and DVD's that will help the novice please? stuey
Hi mate, I have a cocker not a springer, but have enjoyed reading the Joe Irving training spaniels book. DVD wise, I have enjoyed the Edward Martin cocker series and he also does a springer series. I have also enjoyed, but not finished watching the Hawcroft series by Ian openshaw. Not sue if he does a springer version. Also heard people mention the Beccleugh series by David lisett, which is aimed at springers I think. Cheers Stu Edited October 23, 2010 by stuey

cocker boy
Hi mate, . I have also enjoyed, but not finished watching the Hawcroft series by Ian openshaw. Cheers Stu The Hawcroft series of cocker training dvd`s is by simon tyres not ian openshaw.Get the david lissett set of dvds, they are the best for springer training. The edward martin set is very boring to watch, and listen to, so dont bother with that one

Birdy
As a novice I also bought David Lissett's first dvd of the series- aimed at Springer owners. I have been disappointed with it. There's very little day-to-day practical advice. Far superior to this is the Adrian & Caroline Slater offering through Paul French Video. Full of tips and demonstrations to get the basics instilled in your pup. Much more valuable to a novice owner/trainer. Actual advice, not just charm. Lissett is no doubt an industry leader but his 'magic' just doesn't come across on the dvd. Ade Edited October 25, 2010 by Birdy
WGD
I've not seen Adrian Slater's DVD so can't comment, but I think Davie's series is excellent. On reflection, what it does assume is a base of knowledge and the viewer knowing pretty much what they want to achieve, it then shows exercises to go about achieving that and at what stages you should be moving the dog forward. Perhaps it would be a bit much for a complete novice who's not sure of terminology, exercises and ultimately what the dog is capable of doing with the right training.
