AndyCM
I got myself plotted up at dawn (sat with my back against a tree and rifle up on sticks - a rock solid shooting position ) expecting any deer to appear in a mini valley with expected ranges of 80-180 yards and plenty of backstop with banks either side. There were a few rabbits out in the clearing - they'd help me by watching and reacting to any deer that were about to step out - so watching them was a useful part of the stalk (or sit up). A fox appeared and I decided to leave it....that was hard - crosshairs were instinctively on it although I just used it for practice should a deer follow a similar route. After the fox excitement the rabbits settled again and so back to the waiting game. Then a buck appeared where HE wanted to......immediately to my right (with my rifle pointing 90 degrees away ) only 60 odd yards but skylined - so I just froze. Down the slope he trotted, to within 30 yards - maybe I should have brought a catapult Now options were a bit limited, ok one way or another I have to move otherwise he'll literally be on top of me a I'll struggle to do anything useful, so slowly I move rifle & sticks together towards him - he spooks a little but only runs back 5 yards and turns to have a good look at me. I am really grateful I had the 3-12x scope set on 6x and at 35 odd yards (now half way down the bank with plenty of backstop) he gets severe neck ache with a 7mm 140g bullet and drops on the spot. Looks like he may have been scrapping. A result and a bit of blood pumping Edited October 22, 2010 by AndyCM

game_boy
Excellent work. Where is the best place to aim on a beasts neck broad side? I have my own ideas but have only taken the heart/lung shot so far.
AndyCM
Excellent work. Where is the best place to aim on a beasts neck broad side? I have my own ideas but have only taken the heart/lung shot so far. There are a few deer skeleton diagrams on the web which will give you an idea of where the spine is - you want to hit that. I'm less keen on a neck shot if the neck is well twisted as identifying the best aim point then becomes a little too subjective for me. Hope that helps you with my thoughts, they're not "right" just what I'm comfortable with. Cheers AndyCM

cooter
Enjoyed the write up, very nice clean looking beast there, well done. I got two Munties from almost the same starting point as you a few weeks ago. It's amazing how they can't hear your heart pounding when you have to move very slowly.
