i am in process of makin a magnet while i am off work i have made the base and arms and rigs to hold dead birds in . I am looking for a suitable motor and speed controler i have been told you could take a light dimmer switch apart and use that but im not too sure . it will be 12v as i already have some small 7amp batterys . Any advise on length of arms also as i cant make them adjustable so i would need to have them cut to length and keep them at that . many thanks

If you mean a dimmer for mains lighting (ac) it won't work with 12V dc.

If you are using a windscreen wiper motor, then these are normally 2 speed. (Might even be a 3 speed out there?). If you are lucky, one of these speed settings might be just right. If not I have heard of people using a car heater fan multi-speed switch. Don't know how that performs but cheap enough to try from a scapyard.

You could try searching the forum as this subject has come up several times, or hopefully some one will post with more suggestions.

i'm just doing the same thing with some good advice from TEH's build diary and found that the motor i used, a mondeo front wiper motor runs 42 rpm on the fast setting and 32 rpm on slow. that was with plastic decoys with foam wings so heavier than hypaflaps but lighter than dead birds which is important because the more load you add, the more current the motor draws. as i set it up it was drawing 3amps so a 7ah battery would only last just over 2 hours. from reading other sites about wiper motors i think the one i used might draw more current than some others but without knowing that first i just bought the first cheap motor i saw. i haven't fitted a speed control yet but think i'll opt for buying a magtame rather than trying to make my own.
