Highlander
IMO if you're decoying pigeons and they are then most of your shots are at 30m or less range so open chokes are the best way to go. Funnily enough I was debating chokes with someone the other day on a driven game shoot. English game gun, standard chokes 1/2 and 3/4, first trigger sets off 1/2 choke barrel, second trigger sets off 3/4 choke barrel WHY? If you take the birds in the correct way then surely the heavier choke barrel should be first when the bird is well out in front and the lesser choke barrel last when the bird is overhead! Never understood the reasoning behind that!

Never understood the reasoning behind that! But you are presuming you can take a shot as the pigeon comes in to your decoys and it will continue to fly toward you and overhead! In my experience the lesser choked barrel (1/2) is used when the bird is in your "expected" kill zone and if you miss and it flares you use the heavier choked (3/4) as it flares away from your kill zone usually a greater distance than your first shot; Though they have flared and gone over head at times I'd say they usually head in the opposite direction away from the hide.
