reloading

Recommended Posts

Hi can anyone help I have a chance of buying a 30/30 win but my land only has permission for a 22 rimmy, my question is can I reload my own bullets so the muzzle velocity is that of a 22 rimmy?? would this then be ok by the local plod. or am I just dreaming,

any advise would be appreciated. :good:

regards Rob :D

You possibly could if the land was already cleared for 30 calibre but I can't really see why you would want to. I don't think I have ever personally seen this type of rifle used outside of a range in the UK (although some may have tried it). My experience of this type of underlever rifle is that it will handle moderate loads but its bullet speed will be around 400 fps to 600 fps slower than a 308 with the same size round but no where near the same muzzle energy ie 1350 versus 2550 ft-lbs (for 308). In addition, I would not be confident this lack of energy would allow an expanding round to work properly unless you were really close to the quarry.

For the price a good 30-30 costs, keep it for the range (cos they are fun) and think about a 223 or 243 if you want to seriously hunt live game.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply accurate, what do you mean (taster session?)and where? :hmm: I live in Coxhoe Durham, I'm also looking for some land to shoot on in Durham so I can get a 223/243,I am willing to pay for this with some pleasure flights over the east cost in my quantum 582 flex wing, :D this is my first fac but I have had a shotgun licence for 10 years so I am a safe and responsible shooter, :good:

regards Rob.

Just a little thought before you buy that .30/30. If you get it with a licence for range use you will not be allowed to buy expanding ammunition. All .30/30 ammunition is expanding, there is no FMJ ammo made in .30/30

Ok you say, I will have to reload, but again you are snookered. A .30/30 has a tubular magazine and requires a flat nosed bullet, ideally 150grain. None available in FMJ. You can't even get any from the States.

So be careful

I know somebody who had to get rid of his .30/30 because of that. Also, if you want one for deer shooting they are plenty powerful enough but accuracy is a bit of an issue out past about 100yds or so. OK in the States where deer are shot in woodland and ranges are short but not over here.

Hard cast and gas checked bullets should satisfy the law.
