Mmm not sure about river nith, caerlaverock you need a permit for might be free though? I shoot wigtown bay (free permit) and auchencairn bay by permission of landowner. He lets the foreshore to solway wildfowlers I think? Its a big organic farm and he is pretty touchy about shooting. Sorry I cant be more helpful. Good luck!

Quote " i dont understand where the caerlaverock nature reserve boundary is!? " The boundary has just or is about to change so contact Scotish Natural Heritige and they will give you the details and an application form for a permit. I always found Caerlaverock one of the the best wildfowling spots on the Solway.

not really sure what you mean by that!?

You shoot on the land that borders the 'foreshore'..

surely the 'foreshore' (between mean high water and low water) isnt owned by an organic farmer!?

if there is no NNR, LNR, MOD land, Port/Harbour Authority then it must be free for the publics right to recreation therefore including wildfowling!?!?

Presumably it is access rights that he is selling then? He's a great friend of mine and I am sure ge wouldn't do anything illegal.

access is free to all now. but he may provide parking.

i arent saying he is doing anything illegal, just sounded like you were saying he owned the foreshore but i cant see how its possible for him to own below the high water mark (where the right to recreation exists), i am guessing he will own the land running up to the foreshore(above the mean high water mark)!?

Well I'm not sure exactly but he has put loads of footpaths on his land one right along the foreshore loads of dog walkers etc. So he's happy to let people on his land but it took me years to get permission to shoot on the farm. I realise this may not be a legality thing and everyone on here goes on about the freeforall that the foreshore is in scotland but legality aside it's simply not like that in my experience. Maybe I'm too polite but I always ask ;)

It matters not who owns the foreshore, many private landowners own part of foreshore in Scotland. Neither does it matter if it is an LNR or NNR. To stop Wildfowling on a part of foreshore there need to be a bylaw restricting access.

I have shot on LNR's and NNR's which are owned and managed by the RSPB or SNH yet with no bylaw they can't stop you shooting.

In most places when there is a bylaw to restrict shooting then usually the local council replaces the access with a permit scheme.

I don't know which part of the Solway you are talking about but I would guess the landowner is renting parking and maybe access to shooting on his land above the high water mark??

Even if he owns the foreshore he can't stop you crossing his land to get access to shoot it unless there is a bylaw, which I very much doubt.

Cheers,

Mark.
