Guest jonrms
I was ****.. when I was out in my back garden about 30 min ago. I have the full set up for target practice. I was shooting away and what appears on top of my target box... (which stands about 5 feet tall) a BIG pigeon... I couldnt believe it. Here I was plinking at these tiny disc targets and with no regard to its safty it flew on top of the box I am shooting at... Well no need to say but I had a new target! full sniper mode came on.. I didnt need to move. or adjust anything.. One clean and easy shot in the eye/head. and down it dropped.... I walked over to ensure a great hit was recieved... and yep.... it was. I however was not alone... My 2 cats. decided hmmm tasty treat.. and quickly grabbed the prize and dragged it off... oh well cats had a nice treat.... Anyway... how stupid are pigeons... well you know they gotta be pretty stupid when that happens.... PPS I did check before shooting.. it was NOT anyones pride and joy.. no tags.. and was in the VERMIN class..
Reg Booty
Well done for the clean shot through its head, you must be a good shot ! But I wouldn't say that they are dumb - I have found that pigeons which live near residential areas are a little bit more complacent than thier counterparts in the fields. Have you tried to get near a tree with pigeons on in the field without being seen.......! The b@stards spot you a mile a way and take off ! Quite right though, vermin all the same..... David BASC
I remember when I was a lad - shooting at paper targets in my Gran's garden, I used to get pigeons sitting on her roof watching me! I have also been collecting shot pigeons from my decoy pattern and had pigeons come into land around me. I have also had sparrow hawks attasck my platic decoys on more then one occasion! Maori Haz
In my friends garden we were shooting scones (hanging from his goal) with our air rifles, and this squirrel came for a nibble and kept jumping at it, even though it was aware of us shooting at it! That was one less tree rat MH
Guest jonrms
**** about the squirl.... I think I am a good shot.. and from about 25 yards.. which I was shooting from. The bullseye was a easy target on a size of a pea... and i can hit that ring or just outside of it easily... I have been doing target shooting for some time.. and thats with a 22 rimfire.. but never with a air rifle.. anyway.. the air rifle works the same... and it has the odd occasion of the pellet going astray.. but apart from that its ok. so the head shot was easy.... expecially at that range. another 25 yards or more.. and I would have taken it out in the body... SNAKEBITE
so the head shot was easy.... expecially at that range. another 25 yards or more.. and I would have taken it out in the body... Not with the air rifle I hope Too much breast meat on a woodie to do it cleanly. HEADSHOTS only or the only other way is from behind between the wings. Pellet goes in with no meat to get through and kills cleanly. Anyway good shooting with what you got. I have noticed over the last couple of weeks lots of groups of 5-10 woodies sitting right by the road and foraging as the cars go past. Not a care in the world. But go anywhere them on foot and they take off double quick time.
beatingisbest
it depends sometimes you get the ones that fly in to your shot, other times they try to avoid the whole area

SNAKEBITE
I wasn't trying to poke it up, I just couldn't understand what the reply was aimed at. If it was anything I have said then I would like to know, that way I can at least learn from mistakes or misconceptions I have made.

Lancs Lad
Was helping out one of my buddies on his local vermin shoot on top of some factory roofs. Talk about stupid ferrals,,,,,we took about 5 of them, the flock then flew off, circled, landed.............In the same place........ So, more dropped,,,off they went again,,,,,,,,and again,,,,,,and again..... We must have taken about 20 birds before they flew to the other sides of the roof that we couldnt get to. Be careful next time you go along. They seem to pick it up fairly quickly that you are trouble and will be off if you get too close. First few feral trips on my shoot were like going for fish in a barrel, however now I have to be a bit more cunning. Better really as it is a bit more sporting
