The Essex Hunter
I was up early this morning, as I did not partake in any boozing last night because I had planed to go shooting this morning. The rape field is no more than 50yds from my house and has been hit quite hard, but as with this time of the year, the birds don’t seem to stay very long then fly off to other fields. While I was having my breakfast, I heard a few shots so nipped upstairs and picked up my binoculars, I had a scan of the field and I could see a rotary whirling away. Then looked to my right and saw two yellow coats walking up the headland with a police car parked on the edge of the field behind a 4x4.There are three people who shoot over the farm, but I very rarely bump in to them. I could see the guy having to take his gun apart; and then officers looked at it, and mean while the birds were landing in to his pattern! They spent about twenty minutes with him so I got my flask and food ready then took a stroll down to their car just as they were cleaning the very muddy shoes. I explained that I would be on the other side of the field in a while so if they didn’t want to get their shoes muddy again they would know where I would be. I asked why they had been to check out the shooter and there answer was there had been no complaints. However, they were checking for people coursing hares! I smiled, bid them a good morning, and went home. The guy came around to see me a couple of hours after he packed up and we had chat about what went on. He said they gave him quite a hard time and on their first radio check they told him, he didn’t have a licence, he said it was in his car and a second attempt to base found he did have a licence! They asked him why his car was not registered to him and his answer was, it is my wife’s car! So we had a bit of a laugh about their muddy shoes and off he went. I got 21 birds and as usual, they went over the hedge and off that hiding place where all birds disappear to! Yes, they have a job to do which if fair enough, but a few weeks ago a guy got his nose broke by the hare coursers, when he told them to leave and it took the police four hours to turn up! hunters_return
Hi Essex, I bumped into an old school friend a couple of months back who is now a copper. If your talking about the land i think you are, he was saying that the cops are dead set on catching these guys coursing. I hope it wasnt him though as he should know the diff between decoying and coursing he has been a shooter since he was a kid and hos father before him. You would know if it was him he is unmistakable. Paul
