Using back as a command

Hi all,

My missus whilst I have been at work has been using the command ''back'' before releasing after sit to go eat his dinner. I'm worried that this may insight some issues in the future with sending him out as he will associate this command with food. Any thoughts on this matter? As I'm worried it will affect him. What does every body else do ?

Cheers

WGD's correct - but he's also given the right answer that comes with the proviso "not always."

"Back!" is a command for a dog to go until it finds something. Retrieving is a release of the dog, usually on its name - not a command.

You can also use the dog's name to release it to eat - as one of the earlier posters weighed in. It's a good obedience exercise and can carry over to the field when you release the dog to make a retrieve after it's been sitting at ready for however long.

I have five dogs that are fed simultaneously - almost simultaneously, as they're released one at a time by name, and never in the same order. But if I commanded "Back!" they'd break down the back door and continue on looking for a blind retrieve. Sometimes, circumstances means even a real blind retrieve with

:P thought i'd make it simple.

True enough what you say though. I feed mine the same way you do, sat in a line with dinner in front and "released" to eat by name. They are sent to retrieve (visible or marked retrieves) the same way.

"Back" is what I use to push a dog out further when being handled onto a retrieve.

mpk - maybe just ask your missus to use his name to save any confusion at all in the future?
