Barrel chop and screwcut

I have just bought a .22LR and I will be thinking of getting the barrel cut down soon, which is the best length? 14, 15 or 16". Could someone give me an idea of how much it would cost to get it cut down, screwcut and re-proofed?

I am also going to be getting a .243 soon and will want to get that screwcut as well, would this be the same cost as the .22 but without the cutting the barrel?

Cheers

Get a gunsmith to check the barrel isn't choked, according to CZ some of their barrels are and they don't recommend you cutting them down if they are... although this could all just be sales pitch so you buy the shorter one from them in the first place.

The only real benefit to a shorter barrel is if you shoot from a vehicle although I use both my 20" HMR and 16" LR from a 4x4 without any problems.

Cost wise, some gunsmiths will want to reproof the barrel after cutting, this will add about £50 to the cost which could be as low as about £15 for just the cut but I'd take it somewhere I trusted. If they cut the screwcut for mod wrong, it will seriously screw up the rifle's accuracy.

Apparently all the powder burns in the first 12" and the legal minimum is 12.5" so anything over that will be efficient and legal.

One other small consideration, I can't get my 16" to stand up in my cabinet unless I leave the mod on as it's too short to reach the rack part inside.

I'm going to be doing most of the shooting out of the vehicle and a 26" barrel (inc mod) is quite cumbersome. Do you know how much if would roughly be to get it screwcut as well as cut down? Would this be the same cost on a .243? Excellent point about the cabinet, I will measure it.

Cheers

i brought myself a new browning t-bolt last year ( .22lr ) and had the barrel chopped down from 22" to 14" for the same reason as you, to shoot easier from my truck. i must add it shoots perfectly aswell best .22 i've had and i've had a good few at that. it cost me £80.00 for the cut and re-proof.

a screw cut would set you back at least 35 bills round our way, chopping the barrel would add maybe another 15. my local gunsmith changes his prices according to the weather, a re proof is expensive as rfd postage costs bump the price up. the max price for everything would be around 150 bills inc reproof of any gun.
