Ultra XS age?

I've been Having a bit of a look about for my first shotgun. I want a sporter 12 gauge and have seen in a gun shop a Browning Ultra XS. When I've looked on the Internet to compare prices, all the ones I can find have a silver action where as the one in the shop has a black action. Is this just an older model or is it a special edition or something?

I have owned a GTi and two XS models, plus two XT's. The black GTi was the best handling of the lot. One of Brownings better models.

The GTi is normally black with red lines around the action. The Ultra is black with gold lines. If it has neither - have a close look as there should be a trace. If most of it has gone, it should indicate that the gun has been well used.

Check bores - should be spotless. Check the action has no play - remove the forend and wave the barrels about. Any play can easily be felt.

Check the forend wood for cracks.

The XS has been with us for about 12 years, so the black model will certainly be older.

If you fill in your location on your profile, it will give members the opportunity to point you in the right direction of a decent gunshop.

Where I live - the North West - we are lucky to have a fair number to chose from - good guns and decent prices.

How much is the one you are looking at? Is it a sporter? Multi-choked or fixed choke?
