webber
After the pigeon shooting yesterday I went around to keepers cottage to touch base with the keeper. As I was about to leave he told me that the man with the hounds was coming today, and could I arrange some guns to shoot foxes. When I arrived home I got an email off to the majority of syndicate members and a PM to the PW members who have taken roosting pigeon shooting with us. We mustered at the usual spot, and were soon lined out at likely spots. The pair of hounds were soon off, and although I couldn't see them I could follow their progress around the wood via the booming voice of their master. After a short while the hounds gave voice and two shots soon followed. When we eventually made our way back to the cars, we spotted a dead vixen in cub, very cleanly shot. Whilst we perused the shoot map, one of the guns told me that our shoot of some 3000 acres was once part of a much larger shoot that was split into 3 separate shoots many years ago. He went on to point out on the map the location where the Royal train would stop to allow the King to alight to complete the short journey by road to Knowsley Hall. It was reported that the largest bag shot on one such visit was 2200 + although the precise make up of the bag was not known it was most likely Pheasant, Partridge and Hare. It was nice to think for a moment that I could be standing on a peg, shooting a drive once shot by the King. We covered a couple of other woods but found no other foxes; we'll probably do another day with fox drives and hounds, then the snares will be going down, and the hard work will start all over again. webber
Norrie
Cracking story Webbers, and what a thought about a Royal Drive eh??? I was on a Driven Fox shoot yesterday, with a good few hounds....beagles...but we had no luck at all., There was a fair bit snow on the ground, and we think thats what was the cause of the lack of prey, as last week, at another shoot, there was a lack of guns, 5 instead of 12, and the foxes were slipping through all over the place....... We were meant to attend a shoot further north a few weeks ago ,using Bloodhounds but the laird got wind the Antis had heard about it, so it was cancelled... Keep up the good work.. Going doing a couple of estates up dumfries an galloway with them in a week end or two.A good way to get to grips with lamp shy foxes.
