silver pigeon 3
Evening gents, I have just finished my first season as a fowler and it has been the best shooting season i have ever had, the places and people that i have had the fortune to come in contact with have left me with some truly magical memories. To finish the season i visited the marsh with my friend Ray for a morning flight, we arrived a bit earlier than usual to guarentee that we could get our favourite places, so when we arrived to an empty car park we were very pleased. We hurriedly got our stuff together and made the walk to the marsh. Once there we stopped to take in the surroundings for the last time that season and waited to see if anybody else would arrive. Just before 5.45 nobody had arrived so we assuned that we would be on our own so we dropped down the bank to below MHW and got into our positions, ready for the flight. In the darkness we could hear the calls of the gulls, then shortly after the calls of the ducks could be heard with Wigeon,Teal and Mallard all calling from different directions, our confidence was high but we saw nothing until the tide started to flood, this was at about 7.15 with the tide topping out at 9.16. As soon as the flood started there were duck moving all around us, but unfortunately nothing was within range. Out of the blue i thought i heard geese so i listened but nothing else was heard, then about a minute later 2 greylag appeared from behind me and as they went over they parted so 1 flew directly over me and the other banked to the left and went straight over Ray. I brought the gun up onto my bird and hit it hard with the first shot, the bird crumpled and landed in the water in the pill, at the same time i heard ray take the first shot the bird was hit but he gave it a second to make sure, and it dropped on the far bank. Rowan the Labrador made a fine first retrieve on my bird and then made a lovely blind retrieve for the other bird. That was the perfect end to a brilliant season, i hope for many more. scolopax
Well done Being fortunate now to have tried my hand at most forms of shooting and have reaffirmed my opinion that wildfowling is the best, most rewarding, branch of shooting. (Deer stalking come a pretty close second for similiar reasons - a hard won wild quarry taken in wild places at the best times of the day)
