Mightymariner
Just had one of those unexpected days which makes all the disappointments worthwhile. A day when everything goes your way for a while. I went to a friend's farm, no recce, and he pointed to a rape field where a few birds had been seen sitting in the trees. Plenty were in the trees when I arrived and they flew off as I trudged up a serious hill with all the gear to a spot on the brow of a hill, with a hedge bordering two rape fields my chosen spot. For once my hide looked and felt right from inside, the rotary span well, the decoys (shells and FUDs) looked good against the chalky field and the weather, well it was still and blue skies - not that I minded as it was a great day to be out. Set up at 10am, I shot ten in the first hour, hardly missing a thing. The birds came in perfectly, from behind, the sun's shadows giving them away before the reached me, and dropped right in the middle of my pattern where I had left a space. Some of my shooting was actually quite good for once and I paced out at least two birds at 30-35 yards, and a tall crow too. By about 1pm I had 15 and the traffic just ended. Didn't see another bird till I packed up at 2pm. Not a massive bag, but a massively enjoyable day that just felt good!

Mightymariner
I would have stayed later but had to leave. Mind you, my farmer friend said the birds were all sat in some trees next to another rape field when I left. They must have got fed up of me shooting at them! May try again later in week when weather turns windy and milder.

mrpip
Its great when you get a result, I allways think along the lines of I,m out, not at work, make the most of it. Just think you could have paid serious money to shoot, a local farmer who is an excellent shot paid £500 last season for a day on driven partridge, total bag for 8 guns 200 plus he had 5 birds for 7 shots. One day I'll never forget 3 years ago set up on rape at first light with my brother in 1 hide, pigeons suicidal 44 in the bag in 1st hour, then it rained really heavy both got drenched, he went I stayed another hour for 3 more pigeon then gave up, it never stopped raining all day. Never forget that day allways wonder how it would have finished up had it stayed dry. Anyway glad to hear you had a good day
