COOK13
after getting a baikal o/u given to me i was told that the stock has been shortened and the gun doesnt fit me at all. what gun would you reccomend for a first gun?? around the £400 mark
HDAV
£400 isnt a huge budget but a good one, there is plenty of choice but also some old knackers out there best left on the scrap heap. some to consider (I recommend plenty of lessons first so you know what to look for). But for that sort of Money look for a fixed choke O/U gun around 1/4 and 1/2 in both barrels or more open rather than tighter. Lanber,Winchester, Miroku, Rizzini might be in budget you could consider a full size Baikal. (I'm assuming your shooting sporting clays or similar) Where abouts are you? twitchynik
If it's just a short stock then why not get that altered to fit? Will be less than £400 and you can put the rest to either some more lessons or add to it and get a more shiney gun when you have saved a few more pennies. HDAV
I would say it's not a viable option an older baikal depends how short it is upto 1/2" could use a thick recoil pad, but if its 2-3" short I doubt worth it

HDAV
For that then yes something like suggested. Miroku 800? Franchi? Winchester 101 (would probably be my choice) like this one: http://www.guntrader.co.uk/GunsForSale/101201123134436 Rizzini http://www.guntrader.co.uk/GunsForSale/110108163144000
MAL S
you can get a good lanber for that sort of money
ChrisAsh
Second getting a extention fitted to the gun rather than buy new on As you are new to shooting then it will probably take at least a year (unless you shoot thousands of Carts a month) before you are consistant with your mount, so waste of time getting a new gun which needs fitting later, better to modify old gun, bit of good colour match with new wood and you have saved £'s, can use the time to improve your mount and also keep the old gun for use in the field where you wont worry about rain or knocks
