sarol
i am trying to manage rabbits on a golf course, shooting is ok. i have good snares but have only one night a week that i can use them, as they can't be set when the club is open. up to now i have put them in the holes in the hedges, loops fully open (about 6 inches), the bottom of the loops about 4 inches from the ground. they are either shut to a small loop or flattened. is this because the rabbits are traveling too slow through the holes. the snares are held on teals. i have looked at youtube and can not see where i'm going wrong!!!! can any one please advise. thanks
KennyB
are you putting them between the beats?, easily recognized Edited April 10, 2011 by KennyB
Catweazle
Have you "stroked" the wire so that it naturally wants to close ? Or is it sprung open ? For the best advice you will ever get on trapping sign on to Moochers and search for posts by Woodga.
sarol
i have been putting them where the runs through the grass meet the hedge, the snares are in the pinch point under the hedge, can't see the beats (i take it this is where the rabbits hop and land). the runs look evenly flat no patches as the grass is short. the snares are sprung open, as i was told this is best as if the trap misses the first it would reset itself. i'll have a look around for this woodga. point and shoot
Most common problem with snares is to set them TOO LOW! They need to be a good six inches off the ground. Too low and they will keep getting knocked and no catch. Les

Catweazle
should i spring the wire to close or to keep it open? The experts say to set it to open, so as to reset if brushed by a bird, but if it neither opens or closes and there are no kinks in the wire that will be OK.
