pigeonstool
maybe = RainGuard® HD water-repellent lens coating or maybe = In addition the new AquaDuraTM lens coating repels water and dirt to make them even easier to clean and use in extreme weather conditions maybe
Vipa
Hi! Just wondered if anyone could enlighten me as to the difference between HD and non HD models of binoculars? Was wanting a set of Leica geovid range finding binoculars and was just wanting to know the difference between the hd's and non hd's!!! Cheers!! I have the HD Geovids. In daylight, you will be pushed to see any difference between HD and non HDs. The light transmission in fading light is marginally better but not so much that you would notice a lot of the time. The glass is different as far as I'm aware and they are the most up to date design. The non HDs are no longer produced but are still available out there. The HD is all about the type of glass and the optical coatings used.. I love mine! Edited April 24, 2011 by Vipa
seeker
I was thinking about upgrading my older Leicas to a newer set ... so I spent some time at a dealers comparing mine with Ultravids & Ultravid HDs. A visible difference? - in good light - not sure, but the HDs had an edge at dusk. The dealer said that the difference between similar top end glass would never be earth shattering (maybe several minutes at dusk) and suggested that I could go with my eyes not the sales blurb. I didn't see enough differences in performance to warrant the cost to change. Now if I was starting from scratch I think I'd choose between the Old Ultravid and the HD on the 'deal'. They're both stunning top end quality.
Dunkield
I spent some time 'looking' into this, have a search on the birding forums for more detailed reviews of both. Having looked through a pair of HD's at the Game Fair as was very impressed, but I used Zeiss binos already so the difference between what I have and them would only be minimal. If it were my money I would, and one day will, get the 7 or 8x42 Ultravids but non-HD
