Best cartridge for clays.

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. What is everyones ultimate clay cartridge and why? money being no object (so please not X is cheap and does the job :) ) etc .Does anyone here use gamebore white gold original carts for clay pigeon? what are peoples thoughts on these? I'm looking for a clean, lightish recoil shell and dont mind paying more if it means a cleaner gun (and hopefully a less bruised shoulder). I know its kind of 2 questions in one, clean and or light. or maybe its even 3, clean/light/best. thanks gents. :hmm:

This will sound pathetic lol, but they were 21gr comp X 12 gauge i believe. Pathetic i know but it was my 2nd time shooting, and i shot 75 cartridges. Probably bad mounting of the gun (was first time trying gun down. the gun also had no recoil pad, and i only had one thin layer on. and any other excuse i can think of  )

Yep 21g Comp X are the way to go..... and learn to mount the gun, recoil pads shouldn't be required for 21g shells....gun mount is key...

Trying to decide which cartridges to get next.. I've only been shooting 3 times with my new gun and have been using 21g Hull X .. I was going to try 28g but think I'll stay with the 21g for the time being.

Unless you have a good reason to change I wouldn't the 21g Comp X is cheap and breaks clays well (semlls funny to me tho, and sounds a bit odd when it goes off)

As others have said using hull comp x 21G you should not feel much if any recoil as they have got to be one of the best if not the best cartridge for clays.

Also gun mount has been mentioned, could be how you are holding the gun.

By the sound of it, are you using a Browning or Miruko gun as these have a solid but plate. Is the gun yours or a club / instructors gun? Have you tried a gun like a Beretta which has a rubber but pad on them to help obsorb the recoil?

The next posability is gun fit, in that it does not fit you and causing the gun to hit your shoulder causing the bruising.

Seriously, the best cartridges for clays? If they were "that good" Hull wouldn't be pumping them out at the price they are and maybe all the top Hull sponsors would be shooting them instead of the Sovereign or Pro One....

Hi BerettaSV10, impressive mate you are correct, it was a browning 525, belonged to the instructor. Being 6'4 and 21 stone ive heard berettas may be a little short/small compared to brownings and mirokus? Im gonna hopefully buy my own gun at the CLA gamefair, or maybe before if i cant wait lol. was gonna get a but pad fitted to whatever i bought, and was gonna buy a skeet vest due to the bit of padding on the shoulder they have.

Hi, I am 6' 2" and about 19 stone ish, and until recently used a 525. I found the cast on the 525 to be very streight, when you mount the gun are you looking down the rib or the side of the barrell?

I had the cast changed on mine so I was looking down the rib, which cured the mount problem for me. I then tried it on a days shooting of 250 cartridges using lyvale express comp 28G and found the gun kicked me mule.

I thought of having a kick ease pad fitted, but I drew the line wondering if that did not work or what was to come next. Instread I have swapped the 525 for a beretta SP1 and suffer no recoil thumps even using lyvale expresses.

It could well be worth you finding a good instructor or gun shop (watch out for the odd gun shop that justs wants to sell you any thing) that can check your gun fit and mount before you part with money buying a gun, a lot of us have learned the hard way, in buying a gun then find that as you improve or the gun you have just bought, you find the gun fit is not right.

I've been getting slight bruising on my shoulder too, I'm 6ft 5 and had trouble getting a perfect fit but the best fit was the browning White lightening which I brought. Sure once I get the mount sorted after practicing then I won't bruise, it's all part if the learning process :)

The fit of the gun is great as I'm looking straight down the rib, just need to get it mounted correctly each time I shoot , as only just starting out means my mount is slightly different each time

For a beginner they are one of the best, perhaps not for an Olympic hopeful, or for AA shooters.... but for someone starting out hard to beat!

Broad in the chest and tall then unlikely to get a good fit off the peg. Browning are fairly straight in the stock but easily adjusted (the hard plate can be an issue) having a recoil pad fitted can increase the LOP and create a better fit as well as reducing recoil. Budget £100 for cast adjustment and fitting a pad ish

Cast change on mine cost £120 and to have the but plate changed I think was £65 upwards depending on the type of butt pad fitted, as on the 525 the back of the butt is curved and needs to be cut flat to accept the new butt pad unless you can find a curved one that will fit, plus mine was a lacquered stock as well to add a minor problem.

Ah, well depends who you know... did you have the stock refinished? yeah the stock needs cutting straight (or pad sanded to a curve to fit the shape).

The gun was sent back to Browning for the cast to be done done, so it included the postage.

Never bothered having the butt pad done. Over the time I used it I found the fore end was not as comfortouble to hold as a Beretta one, so in the end I decided to swap it for another Beretta. Plus as you say if the cutting of the butt chipped the finish (might of only been a slim chance of it happening) I would need it refinishing.

I used to bruise like mad when I started out, until I sorted my mount out!

As for clay carts I shoot black gold by gamebore, they kick like hell but I love them!

I'm not a huge build, but black golds a Miroku MK70 & no recoil pad of any sort and I don't suffer discomfort at all now. So I think gun mount is the key.
