Cosd
As you may have seen a little while back I was asking for recommendations on clay instructors for my 15 year old girl who is doing the Duke Of Edinburgh award. To cut a long story short, I went for Catamong's choice which was A1 Clay ground. My daughter had never shot a gun before and I was really chuffed when she asked if she could try clay shooting. Having two "girlie girls" I never thought we'd ever go shooting together. Spoke to the clay ground and specifically asked if she could have the same instructor for all 6 lessons for consistency, and the owner Claudio Calpado said that he would do the lessons. Claudio was a good guy, he spent time with Victoria both whilst shooting clays and in the clubhouse covering all aspects of the sport; It was also very interesting for me as I have only ever been a couple of times as I mainly shoot pigeons. He gave her an Instructors folder to borrow which was over and above what I expected, which she used to take notes for her course work. Being she is slightly built she shot a 20 bore Beretta supplied by the club and used 21g cartridges. She's left handed and found she was also eye dominant, so Claudio got her shooting with one eye shut. I noticed this gave her some problems on right to lefts as she was seeing the clay's a little late. Over all she loved the experience. She shot OK being better at clays driven toward her and over head (apologies for the non technical terms). On her last day he took her to a tower where the clays were driven from in front and overhead, but this time he would release a second clay as soon as she fired her first shot, she had 6 double shots, hitting 4 singles, missing 1 and getting a double. She was happy and I was beaming Unfortunately the club doesn't lend guns out unless it is a lesson, so I'm going to keep an eye out for a 20 bore so we can go together and maybe take my 14 year old as well. I will be checking another local club to see if they hire guns out in the mean time. I have some pictures that I took on my Iphone but can't seem to get them to load as "file is too big" and I don't have software here to reduce them. miroku_fan
I am pleased to read that your daughter has had such a positive introduction to clay target shooting. I was interested to see that you mentioned the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme. Did your daughter participate in shooting as part of this award? The reason that I ask is because my youngest son was not able to use clay target shooting as his sporting activity in the bronze award which he has recently completed. I was told that shooting was not recognised as a sport by the DoE scheme. They would have accepted archery and fishing but not shooting
Cosd
She actually chose it from the list of activities on their website. This is the first one she is doing (silver) but I doubt that would make a difference. I couldn't put pictures up on this thread so started a new one in sporting pictures for anyone interested. miroku_fan
I am just off the DoE website and still cannot find clay target shooting. Underwater rugby yes. Shooting no. I actually contacted the organisation over this matter and was told on several occasions it was an emphatic no to clay target shooting regardless of level. Field and Clay
For D of E Clay shooting is under 'skill' my daughter has just done it in the Bronze award. Cosd Well done to your daughter.
miroku_fan
You are right. I thought that clay target shooting would come under "physical" where all the sports and recreational activities are listed. I was clearly misinformed when I contacted them over this matter.
