HW100TMXMAN
Hi all Need some help, having never drilled stock before, I want to make sure I minimise the risk of splitting the wood! All advice and help warmly welcomed! Also stock could do with a bit of a refresh, varnish??
apache
Remove the stock Cover area with masking tape Mark where you want the hole. Use a brand new, sharp brad point drill bit. Mark the depth you need the hole plus a few mm using a circle of tape around the drill bit. Centre the brad point on your cross and start slowly keeping the drill horizontal. I would use a cordless drill as you have more control. It is simple. [make sure you drill the correct size for the stud - too small a hole and you can split the stock screwing the stud in.] Edited May 14, 2011 by apache
kent
Do remember not to drill too close to the end or you will split the wood. as a generalisation around 1/3 rd of the way up but have a look at some factory fitted if unsure. with the right drill for the screw size you should not need glue, but if you do due to over-drilling etc ie too deep and the screw tightens to a funny angle you cant beat PVA wood glue (when this sets up you will never move it) of course eppoxy will work but will be no stronger and more messy to deal with. Make sure you totally clean up any surface exess glue or you will end up effecting the finish a std wet cloth will clean up pva you will need white vinigar on epoxies
