Pigeons On Peas

Pigeons have been starting to build up a little here on the peas so my good friend Andy 'Ace Pigeon Shooter' Crow and I had an afternoon decoying.

We set up double hides (approx 30m apart) on one decoy pattern. The sport was steady most of the afternoon with just one quite spell, with the wind was strong and on our backs so almost perfect conditions. Total picked up, 181. We should have made 200 but we had to pack up before the birds had finished feeding.

As a matter of interest at what stage of growth were the peas??

You have to watch for a while as they are hidden well! What looked 1 or 2 birds dropping in to me were actually hundreds once I walked around the headland with the dog!

Shooting with the Crowman? Lucky you - he knows his stuff that guy! Watch him on the fieldsports tv channel.

It seems to be hit and miss with the pigeons on the peas at the moment. We estimate there's around 1000 pigeons on the area around the peas, but when I looked over them today there were very few feeding.

I could go to any one of about 8 pea fields i can shoot at the moment, and find 2-300 birds feeding there. It's just a question of going to the right field at the right time and hoping that someone hasn't beaten me to it.

It seems that the best time to shoot at the moment is about 1pm onwards - i've seen few birds on the fields at 8am.

Around my parts the pigeons appear to be totally focussed on the lucern at the moment - not interested in anything else.

Interestingly, of the 50 birds I've shot at various times over the last few days every single bird has an empty crop. They seem to be just grazing little and often and never building up a full crop. I've had a number of birds that must have been drinking just before shot - water pours from them as I lift them from the ground!
