jamesmacc
hi all, im fairly new to here, i joined last year for advise on what .17 hmr to buy. after weeks i decided on a cz 452 .17 hmr thumbhole stock. another few months went buy as i was too busy building my house. in the mean time i seen a beautiful howa 1500 varmint .243 in pepper thumbhole, i had a shot of my friends .243 ruger so i put a variation in and had one added to my licence for the future. gun cabinet is on the way and rifle is coming in july as a present from the mrs, i went for the new 455 model as aparantly its taking over from the 452. im looking for everyones opinions of scopes, mounts etc. i like fairly large scopes, i was going to add a SAK mod and i like the look of the nikko nighteater 3-12x56 or possibly a hawke sport hd ir 4-12x50 or a gameking 4-16x50 ao ir. any advise on a good setup or pictures would be great. thanks, james
Dekers
http://www.shootinguk.co.uk/guns/rifles/381445/17HMR_calibre_sound_moderators_review_.html Note the prices and then buy a SAK. I have the SM11 on my HMR, my .22lr and .22WMR have a SAK fitted, there is NO WAY a SM11 rates a 5 against the SAK at 3.5. My SM11 died and Edgars replaced it, the sound moderation is almost impossible to tell between that and the SAK. Scopes get very personal, so the choice is yours alone. You obviously need reasonable mounts from an engineering/tolerance point of view, but there is no recoil to talk of on a HMR so most will do, I have Sportsmatch, about £20 (ish) I seem to remember, no need to spend a fortune! ATB!
jamesmacc
thanks for the reply mate, i will defo go with the SAK. i like the wild cat whisper as its easily stripable etc but they are like £120 if i remember correctly. i will have a look for decent mounts now, is it 11mm mounts on the 455? and is there any advantage to a 2 piece mount rather than a 1? cheers, james

All my CZ are 452, and for some reason they are 11mm or 3/8, depends on model...don't ask, I haven't got a clue! I don't know what the 455 is, but I suspect a check round the CZ website... http://www.czub.cz/en/Default.aspx ..... or a word with Edgar Bros will soon solve that one! Most people favour 2 piece mounts on "ejecting guns", there is a wide choice, single piece are relatively uncommon. Most manufacturers will be happy to talk to you as well, Google could well be your friend.
jamesmacc
just been and checked and they claim its a 11mm mount. they also say the 455 has an adjustable trigger, that would be handy as i was going to buy an upgraded trigger to take the creep out. The 452 has an adjustable trigger as well! But I do understand the 455 is a totally different trigger... but I don't know what it's like! jamesmacc
just found these on ebay. Hawke Match high Scope Mounts 9-11mm with a 14 day money back gaurantee if they are no use for £20.50. they should do the job?

Not sure what scope you intend on getting but you want the Objective Lens as close to the barrel as is sensible, I have a 52mm objective on one of mine and it still has MEDIUM mounts! Colster
Rings don't need to be anything over the top, Sportsmatch or BKL's will do the job nicely. As said above, look no further than a SAK, yes there are other mods that may be a teeny bit quieter but not when you consider the extra in cost. The bullet makes most of the noise anyway and no moderator can do anything about that. As far as scope I'd avoid the Hawke HD, I'm a big fan of Hawke but I really don't think the HD is a good scope at all. Depends on your budget but the fave HMR scope seems to be the MTC Mamba or Viper (personally I like low turrets so I'd go Mamba (30mm tube) or Mamba Lite(25mm tube)).
