jaystevens1971
Hi just after a bit of advice regarding decoying on a pea field, me and my friend have been shooting this field for the last few weeks and as we are quite new to permission shooting I think we need a few pointers, I have done research into decoy patterns and taken notes from the sticky on the tips section and watched flight patterns etc and set out with that and the wind in mind but they do not seem to be hitting the field hard, the crop is about 15-20 inches high so I was wondering do the pigeons stop feeding on them as hard once they reach a certain growth stage. We also have Barley and Rape fields on the same permission (All connected to each other), We have not seen much activity over these fields either they just seem to do quick fly overs. Any advice would be very much appreciated.
the_commoner
pigeons will ignore crops for no apparent reason and will no doubt be feeding elsewhere, i have some permission on peas which 2 weeks ago were getting hammered, last wekk or so barely a bird pigeons will feeds on peas at all stages wait until they start taking the crops off and you will have a better chance of decoying them onto the stubbles just dont shoot the fields too early, let the numbers get up a bit for a day or two if you want a decent bag be patient and observe the fields - LOTS - you will elarn a fair bit of their habits by doing that
deny essex
They will feed on pea fields at all stages , at the moment the barley and wheat are also comming into prime eating for pigeon especialy on laid patches, rape in my area is nearing ripe and any crop near ripe is a feed for pigeon. Time of day can also play a part as to when they feed also the weather, they can feed into the evening , it realy is a study the field days before or on the day and go with your best knowledgeable hunch.
