IKNIGHT167
I had the following reply from BCC regarding this; Dear Thank you very much for your email regarding the Gun Quarter. I assume that you have not actually read the Big City Plan. If you had, you would know the City Council, despite misleading/inaccurate reports in the media, are not (and have never proposed) renaming the historical Gun Quarter, nor are proposing to alter any signage referring to the Gun Quarter nor alter the name of the Gun Quarter Controlled Parking Zone. As there is no intention to rename the Gun Quarter there is no cost whatsoever to the City Council (apart from the time replying to emails based on misleading/inaccurate media reports that the City Council are renaming or proposing to rename the Gun Quarter) The historic Gun Quarter remains a distinct and unique area within a much larger area identified for planning purposes as St George and St Chad which stretches up between what was the Inner Ring Road and the Middle Ring Road at New John Street West near Hockley, Newtown and Lozells. This is the same approach the City Council has taken with other historic/cultural quarters, thus the Irish Quarter is included (as a distinct and unique area) within the broader area of Digbeth and the Chinese Quarter is included (as a distinct and unique area) within the broader area of Southside & Highgate. All four historic/cultural quarters (Chinese, Gun, Irish and Jewellery) are recognised within the text of the Big City Plan. The City Council have identified the historic Gun Quarter as the area around Shadwell Street, Loveday Street, Princip Street, Price Street, Vesey Street and Bagot Street (ie. the area south of the canal and St Chad's Queensway between the A41 and the A38) - see enclosed map taken from the City Council's Big City Plan. (BCC have included Bagot Street as our understanding is that in 1798 the arms/weapons, to be used in the war with France and Spain, manufactured in the Gun Quarter were put on show to the public from a building in Bagot Street) (See attached file: Gun Quarter map.pdf) I hope this clarifies this matter and sets the record straight. Yours sincerely Timothy Huxtable Councillor Timothy Huxtable Cabinet Member - Transport, Environment & Regeneration, BCC
Blunderbuss
Came across this: --------- Dear Friends,Supporters and Customers, Some of you may be aware that it is proposed that the name of the Birmingham Gun Quarter is changed to the invented title of St.Chads and St.Georges for what, it appears, is an effort by a small element of Birmingham City Council Councilors* to remove the "Gun Quarter" from the proud history of this fine city. The reason for this initiative was a 50 signature petition from "residents" of the Newtown and Lozells area of the city, which is some distance away from the industrial Gun Quarter. For over 250 years our Gunmakers (both men and women) have promoted a secure and safe environment, supported our Armed Forces and produced world class products exported across the globe. If you feel you would like to support our industry and keep our name and traditions please visit http://www.savethebirminghamgunquarter.co.uk and register your support. *It should be noted that several Birmingham City Councilors agree with our views and have signed our petition. Al88
I'm no Brummie, but I think it's outrageous that such a tiny petition can be pushed through to neglect the areas heritage. It can't be long before us Black Country boys get the same treatment!
