caeser
I took flatnm (from this forum) out for the first time yesterday. The farmer had told me he'd been watching a load of pigeon on a large field of rape stubble, the day before. On arrival at the field, we found big tractors working it. The farmer came over and apologised , saying the contractors were muck spreading, and he didn't realise they were going to be on that field, on that day. So we had a scout around the local area of about 1000 acres trying to find the birds. There's plenty of barley stubble and rape stubble. Only managed to find a flightline along a narrow wood, but it over looked a field of rape stubble, and there was a few birds on it, so we decided to give it a go. About 3 hours and only 4 pigeon later, decision was to move again. Had a bit of a drive, and found a field with about 50 birds in some rape stubble. This looks promising I thought. I always want to go where the pigeon want to feed, it's as simple as that. Set up again. About 25 decoys, battery flapper, rotary. Birds didn't want to play. We could see birds several hundred yards away going onto a pig field. Managed to pull a few birds into the deeks, but most were intent on going where they were going. It did also bring a few towards us for a nosey, but they were really out of range. I'll still have ago at them though if it's quiet, and knocked a few high birds out of the sky from 60-70 yards. We ended up with 16 woodpigeon, 4 ferals and a couple of crows. It's probably been my most unsuccessful day since about march. I was really disappointed for Tony (flatnm) because its the first time he's been with me, and he travelled a long way. I've had over 700 woodpigeon from this area this year, and I'm thinking now, that these birds that are still here, have wised up to the deeks, and flapper and rotary etc. Not to worry though, I'm really lucky enough to have another 3000 acres or more to shoot over, and there's so much wheat that hasn't been combined yet. One more thing, about 6.30pm as we were driving away through several fields, it was probably about three quarters of a mile back to the road, we drove past a couple of barley stubble fields either side of us, and lo and behold, there's the pigeons,(about 50-100 or so) on the barley stubble. They weren't there earlier. Never saw any on the barley before that. Like I said , I think they've wised up to me.
Cyffyllog
I could not get the Pigeons to come to the Decoys yesterday, over wheat that has yet to be combined could not get them to the Magnet either, there were a few flying about but ignored the attempts completely, ended up with one off the flight line ! hey ho. I've shot 100+ on the same field, in the same place and with the same set-up for 4 consecutive weeks before. Pigeons are quite stupid. Yesterday round me was not a good day for decoying bright and no wind ,i had a client out and we tried alsorts but it just would not work ended with just 18 birds Conditions exactly the same with us. When you've got someone with you, and you want them to have a good day, it's disappointing. Personally if I have a quiet day, I expect it now and then, so no problem. But with a guest !! I enjoyed watching the goings on around us, I always do. A couple of deer walked past the front of the hide, about 60 yards away. They had no idea we were there.Brilliant. Mightymariner
It's right place at right time, never mind the conditions. Tuesday, when it was cloudy and windy, even with plenty of birds about I only got five. Yesterday, no wind, sun then two hours of rain, got 23 on disced rape stubble. What's the difference? IMO, yesterday the birds wanted to be on the stubble, Tuesday they didn't - simple as.

Agreed...We've shot 220 on the same field from the same hide position in the last 2 weeks..
