louis682
I've built a concrete base of just over 3m x 2.5m in the garden and ordered the appropriate galvanised mesh panels. Next step when the panels arrive is to crack on with roofing. When this is complete im going to order a decent kennel to go inside the structure. A few questions? What is the ideal insulated kennel i can buy? or is best to go with option of building one out of breeze blocks? I have no electrical point in the garden for a heater is this a necessary requirement? Would be great if anyone could take some pics of their kennels and some points of requirements. Thanks Louis

Thanks Louis Breeze blocks would be a good idea buddy good at insulating plus you could make it so that there should be little draft coming in i thing thats the trouble with the small type boxes, i have a heat lamp in my kennel as i come home from the marsh in subzero temps and dont think its fair on the dogs to leave them out there with no warmth i take them in the house first dry them properly give them something to eat then put them out there...... Ok looks like ill get a sparky in at some point then, never built anything from breeze blocks before but i'll give it a go and do some swatting up how hard can it be  however my concern was that the dogs sleeping area was going to at waist level (ie fairly low) is a lamp still ok to use? Should be fine buddy most people say dogs are ok outside in a kennel aslong as they are out of a draft and no doubt thats true but when you dog has been working all day in freezing conditions only fair to make him/her comfortable hey

Good luck Lee
Dirty Harry
You can buy a sealed bar type heater for the kennel instead of a heat lamp. I have just ordered a kennel with one in. Fitted with a guard was only £35. Harry

Might be worth a look if its better ill get them one simple as that do you mean this sort of thing http://www.netpetshop.co.uk/p-34379-cattery-and-kennel-electric-heaters.aspx?CAWELAID=751072778........... Dirty Harry
Advantage is they can't break it, smash the bulb or chew the flex if you fit it properly. You don't need to suspend it from anything so the kennel box can be smaller and warmer. Harry

hitfreshairagain
Hi again..The heater Harry is refering to is a frost protection type heater and will raise the temp in a well insulated kennel. You can also buy a grill purposley made to fit over the heater and they are available at most trade electrial outlets ie T.L.C or city electrical.you can also wire one up via a thermostat so it will come on when the temp drops below a certain desired level.Have a look at the link. All the best Lee http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Heating_Index/Tubular_Heaters/index.html#Philips_Tubular_Heaters
