l1ukeRS
me and my mate have been messing around for the last couple of week making a shotmaker, we made a couple and we are nearly there with the shot size and shape etc, but today i decided id have a go and make one powered by electric instead of gas like the others we made. It was a bit of a pain as he has all the tools for the job on his farm so i had to make do with what i had in the garage to start with i salvaged a bit of angle off an old road sign and made a bit of a frame out of it then i added the heating element to it i then decided id make something so that i can adjust the angle of it once its done so i did this i then made a bit of a template for a top i didnt have any sheet but then i went and raided my grandads garage and found a bit of rusty old sheet so i bent that up and fitted it on trying to cut out the hole with an angle grinder was not easy, but im sure it will do the job a holes a hole no i just need to get a simmerstat for the ring and make up the tray and the drippers or i might even try a little box with holes drilled in the end again
sitsinhedges
I would suggest putting soft firebrick underneath to avoid heat loss. To have the element nearer the edge so it sits right against the ramp of the pot and so heats the ramp easily. Also have the base tilting at 12 degrees to throw the lead forward towards the drippers and create more head pressure along with the ramp at 18 degrees to make a total of 30degrees. You can actually cut the element tails into the soft fire brick and do away completely with the metal frame if you want, the brick will support it Base your pot on the element size. And most important of all an RCD, you don't want an electric shock from a potful of molten lead Edited September 14, 2011 by sitsinhedges
l1ukeRS
i will try the firebrick where can you get them from ive never heard of one before? i might keep the frame and fit the brick to it though so i have something to attach the simmerstat too etc i did wonder if i the element needed to be closer to the edge thats why i bolted it all together instead of welding it :o ill move that tomorrow
